www.CakewalkChicago.com was created in 2003 by Lori Parrett to create a renewed interest in homestyle cooking and baking based on "grandma's kitchen" where many of us who enjoy cooking first developed our skills. When Grandma spent time in the kitchen with her loved ones sharing techniques and secret ingredients she did it thoroughly and lovingly, using the best ingredients available to her. Learning from her and eating with her represented quality, comfort and love.
With our busy lifestyles many of us miss the opportunity to create a kitchen like the ones we remember from childhood. When adults work in the kitchen they often recreate favorite memories of easy going times, and when children are invited into the kitchen as active participants they see how much fun cooking can be, and they learn wonderful lessons about eating well and other life skills.
The "culinary entertainment" offered by www.CakewalkChicago.comincludes classes for cake decorating, candy making, foods for entertaining, and specialized classes for any occasion including Bridal /Baby Showers, Bachelor/ette Parties, Birthdays, and Intimate dinner parties as well as private lessons that can cover any cooking topic of your choice.
Lori's Cakewalk Chicago is dedicated education and retail location on the south side of Chicago specializing in the sale of cake decorating and candy making supplies and continuing its hallmark of creative cooking classes.
About The Owner
Pastry Chef Lori P.
I love food: eating it, cooking it and playing with it. I wanted a dedicated forum to share what I love with others. So I founded www.CakewalkChicago.com for people who love to cook for themselves, family, friends and are eager to learn new techniques. www.CakewalkChicago.com shows how easy it is to be creative, try something new, and share a special and memorable treat with people you care for.
Like many in the food service industry today I began my professional life as something else, a high school instructor teaching nutrition, and other life skills to at risk youth. I was drawn to a natural passion for cooking that I received from my Granny. She would fuss at you for getting in her way while she was cooking but really didn't mind it when you sat in the kitchen, asking questions, tasting and learning what she knew about making good food. Influenced by her I found myself practicing what I learned in college when other students were eating ramen noodles or tuna salad. A few years after receiving a BA in English from Dillard University in New Orleans I realized how much I enjoyed food and cooking (especially baking) and attended the Cooking Academy of Chicago.
After graduating, I taught continuing education classes to home cooks at the Academy, studied the Wilton Method of cake decorating and later became a cake decorating instructor to home cooks. I began making simple cakes for practice found instant gratification in the oohs, aahs and big smiles. As my skills improved and I channeled creative energy from my artist father I began catering events and making special occasion cakes. I later became pastry chef and breakfast cook and kitchen manager with Pangea Food Service in Maine. Since that time I have attended the Wilton School of Cake Decorating and received a Master Cake Decorating diploma, been pastry chef in Colorado, and been a freelance decorator for the 2005 with Wilton Yearbook.
When I have time I prepare special meals and decorate cakes for family and friends. It all keeps me connected to doing what I love. I even combat fatigue and worry by getting into the kitchen and baking. Sometimes the results will fill my freezer and grace my friends and co-workers (if they're lucky).
